Getting laid off: Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it burned in one

It’s the gentle slope of mid-morning and I’m in bed, propped up by pillows, laptop balanced on my knees. I’m the only one in the apartment. There’s a ping on my calendar for a meeting with Lisandra at 10:30am. I finish typing up my answer to Finn, those always take me a while. I check the clock: it’s too late to make a cup of coffee before the meeting starts.

At 10:30 sharp, a little bubble pops up, telling me that people were in the chatroom. I clicked on the notification and entered the room.

“Hi Lisandra!” I exclaim. “Are you traveling?”

“No, dear, I’m in the office. How are you?”

“Good! I like your hair!” My heart is beating uncertainly.

There’s a ping and Matthew joins. Matthew is an HR associate who’s in the office regularly and we have a good rapport.

“Revati, unfortunately there’s been a couple of business decisions and we’re going to have to let you go,” says Lisandra.
